Starting university is a bit like learning a new language. There are countless terms and expressions that become part of your daily life, and it’s easy to forget what different things mean. That’s why we have put together this little glossary to help you feel more prepared to navigate this new world.
Academic Books
During your studies, you will need to get various books for your curriculum. Academic Books is a nonprofit bookstore that receives your reading list each semester, so you can easily and quickly obtain your books.
Academic Quarter
The academic quarter is often used in university contexts and refers to the first fifteen minutes of a lecture or class. Therefore, you should always be aware of whether a meeting or appointment follows the academic quarter rule or not, so that you neither arrive too early nor too late.
EDUROAM
Eduroam is the internet service used by all Danish universities. You need to download it from wifi.ruc.dk and log in with your RUC credentials.
ETCS
ECTS is the unit of measurement used to indicate how much time is expected to be spent on a study activity. One ECTS credit corresponds to approximately 27 hours of work, and a normal semester is set to 30 ECTS credits. You can use ECTS credits to assess how much work is expected from you in your various study activities.
Subject Committee
In the basic period, it is common to form a subject committee consisting of students from the basic class who wish to represent their fellow students in dialogue with the class coordinator and instructors. The subject committee can, among other things, convey complaints or evaluations of various academic activities, and generally, the subject committee can be said to have a finger on the pulse. Additionally, the subject committee often assists during project formation and can initiate academic activities within the class.
Academic Literature
Before the semester starts, a reading list is published, which you can find on Academic Books. It is your own responsibility to buy or borrow the books you need for your courses. You can also find academic literature online and at the Royal Library. Additionally, you can join the group "BRUGTE STUDIEBØGER RUC" on Facebook. Here, you can buy and sell used books from other RUC students.
Exams
At RUC, there are a wide variety of different exam formats. These can include written take-home assignments, on-site exams, oral exams, active participation, and many more. You can see which exam format applies to your course on study.ruc.dk.
Lecture
At the university, some teaching takes place in large lecture halls for many people and resembles less the close-knit classroom teaching familiar from high school.
STADS
STADS stands for S(T)udy Administrative Data System, and it is the system you use when you need to enroll in courses or projects. You can also use the site to check your exam results, and later in your studies to register for study activities.
Intra.ruc.dk
Intra.ruc.dk is RUC's common portal. You can use it to find links to email, printing, ordering student cards, and other practical matters. Additionally, it contains important overviews of information you will need throughout your studies, as well as a wide range of pages that you can search for within the intra portal.
Student ID Card
All students at RUC can order a student ID card at kortprint.ruc.dk. The student card functions as a key card, allowing you to print on RUC's printers and access the buildings you use after closing hours. Additionally, you can use the student card to get student discounts at many different shops, cafés, and cultural venues. Your student card also serves as identification for any exams, so always remember to have it with you.
Moodle
Moodle is one of the most important platforms you need to become familiar with. Here you will find an overview of the current courses, as well as descriptions of what each session contains and what you need to prepare for each session. It is important that you stay updated on Moodle as this is where your instructors announce information regarding teaching or possible cancellations.
RUCmail
All students and staff have their own RUCmail. It is important to check your RUCmail frequently, as this is where you receive important information from RUC’s administration regarding deadlines and other important tasks you need to remember.
TAP
Abbreviation for technical administrative personnel, encompassing all employees who are neither researchers nor educators.
Party Committees
There are a number of party committees at the university that organize large parties for everyone who wants to participate. But sometimes you want to hold a smaller party for your study group, and here you can also establish a smaller party committee, which instead takes care of organizing cool social initiatives within the study group. Each group has a group account, which can be used for social and academic initiatives within the group.
VIP
Abbreviation for academic staff, encompassing researchers and educators.
Project writing
At RUC, each semester students write a project within a self-chosen topic, typically in groups of 3-7 people. The project is the written presentation of the investigation you conduct, and a lot of time is especially spent on writing the project when you have completed your courses in November. The project concludes with an oral defense where, together with your project supervisor and examiner, you discuss your investigation and the new knowledge you have created.
Courses
Your education is composed of a series of courses and projects. Courses here correspond to what you know as subjects from high school. At the beginning of your education, you need to take basic courses and basic projects. After that, you must choose your bachelor subjects, which include a number of courses and projects.
Study Regulations
The study regulations are the official framework for your education and the specific study components your education is composed of. It contains all information about how much teaching you must attend, whether the teaching is mandatory, and general information about what is required of you in your education. The study regulations help secure your rights and are therefore the most important document in planning your studies.
Study.ruc.dk
Study.ruc.dk is RUC’s online course catalog. Here you can find information about which courses are offered, detailed descriptions of the courses, their learning objectives, assessment criteria, and a description of the exam format. Additionally, you can find the names of instructors, expected workload, and more. You can use the site’s calendar function to add your classes and exam periods to your own calendar.
