The structure of a semester at RUC

*HumBach typically only has project exams in January.
*Humtek may have courses/workshops extending further into November.

All the different bachelor programs and subject modules have varying structures regarding when their courses, exams, and project formations take place. However, there are some general guidelines that apply to the majority of students at RUC concerning the timing of these activities. If you want to read more about your specific education and how it is structured in terms of courses and subject modules, you can find more information on How to RUC. Here, you can access your assigned team and see more detailed information under the module "Study structure and study planning".

Social events

It isn’t just parties that take place out on campus. You can find events of various sizes through our student organizations at RUC, such as social, academic, and political events, among others. For example, the Student Council holds a Thrifting Day every six months, where students bring their old clothes, which we collect in the canteen and lay out on tables so that students can swap items from their wardrobe for free. It can therefore be a good idea to follow the Facebook page “RUC Students”, where many different events are posted. You can also follow the student organizations you find interesting on social media, so you will always be updated on the events they hold. We have created an overview of the different student organizations under module 2 in the lesson "The volunteer  environment at RUC," where we have linked to all the organizations' social media.

Exams

When you finish your exams in January, you have free time until the next semester starts in February. There is also a period between the submission deadline in December and the exams in January, where you usually don't have much to study for, so this is typically a good opportunity to take a Christmas break. In the semester starting in February, the last exams usually take place in June, so you have July and August off. However, you might risk having to retake exam in July/August due to illness or if you have failed an exam.

Intensive period

After your courses have been completed, you will enter the intensive period. This is when you and your group work intensively to complete your project, as there are typically no other scheduled activities during this time. There is usually just under a month between the last courses and exams and the project submission deadline, so the intensive period is typically said to last about a month.

The project

Your semester project accounts for 15 out of the 30 ECTS credits you need to earn each semester, which means that half of your education should be dedicated to working on projects. Your semester project is therefore something you work on continuously throughout the entire semester. Typically, project formation will take place during the first couple of weeks after the semester begins, where you are divided into self-chosen groups. However, it can also occur somewhat later in the semester during specific course modules.

Courses

Typically, you have 2-3 courses during a semester, alongside your project. Usually, the various courses take place once a week, so during a week you’ll have classes on campus 2-3 times, with varying module lengths. This can however be different for some course modules, but there will always be enough free days to also work on your project during the week. Many of the courses last 8-12 weeks, which means that you, on average, only  have courses during the first two months of the semester.

Big campus events

There are many annual and semester-related events held on campus, besides the introductory period at the start of the semester. Every year after the intro period, we at the Student Council organize the boat race and the semester start party on the first Friday in September. One of the following weeks in September, the Kamarilla hosts the annual year party, which is one of the largest one-day festivals in the Nordic countries. You can see a calendar of the various events happening this semester below.

Upcoming events

Here we have gathered some of the major upcoming events for this semester, to make it easier for you to get an overview of them! This calendar shows both events planned by the Student Council as well as events organized by other associations. Many of these events are our own, as we are responsible for many of the larger events, and the others are the ones we KNOW will take place this semester. At the Student Council, we work hard to bring students new, exciting, and relevant events throughout the year. If you have suggestions for specific events or collaborations you would like to see, you can write to us at our contact email.
