Welcome to the Department of Communication and arts

The Department of Communication and arts (IKH) is one of RUC’s four departments. IKH is responsible for the Bachelor’s Degree in Humanities and the International Bachelor’s Degree in Global Humanities. In daily life, you won’t necessarily be thinking about which department you belong to, as the departments primarily serve as a way for the university to organize which teaching and administrative staff are employed where, as well as which programs and students they are responsible for. Instead, the departments help to present certain frameworks for you, such as which buildings you can expect to spend time in, which staff members are based in those buildings, and the social, academic, and democratic environments you will engage with during your studies.

Building 20 is the heart of the global humanities bachelor's program. The building contains a large classroom as well as smaller classrooms where most of your study activities will take place. Like most other buildings at RUC, the building is filled with smaller group rooms that you can use for the semester projects you will write each term.

The building is meant for you as students, and you have the opportunity to use it for much more than just studying. For example, you can organize parties through your party committee, cozy cafés, movie nights, and much more.

Furthermore, you also have the chance to influence how the building is furnished, which paintings or posters are displayed, what the lounge area looks like, and, if RUC agrees, even decide that a particular wall in a specific room should be painted a different color.

In short – take ownership of your physical study environment and help create the best possible settings for your time as a student. Of course, within the university’s framework and rules.

Important people to know at the university

Throughout your education, you will meet many different staff and instructors, but during your first three semesters, there are certain people you will encounter much more frequently than others. When new students accept their admission to RUC, they are assigned to a specific bachelor team – Each of these teams has an assigned team Coordinator, a Study Environment Tutor, and Project Supervisors.

Your study environment tutor is an older student employed to, in short, help you have an enjoyable study experience. They can be described as a good friend or an older sibling that you can turn to when you feel lost or have questions about your studies. They can listen to your frustrations and offer perspectives based on their own experience with the program. If they cannot answer your questions themselves, they can help you get in touch with the right person who can. They act as a kind of guide, who has been through much of what you are about to experience. Additionally, they are there to help your team bring to life the things you want to do. They can assist you in establishing committees within your team and guide you on how to organize social and academic events for your team.

Your team coordinator is somewhat like a form of class teacher. The team coordinator is an employed instructor who, among other things, is responsible for coordinating your project formation, teaching some of your courses, and being available to you if you have any questions.

Project supervisors are lecturers or PhD students employed to guide the project assignments you write each semester. Each project group is assigned a supervisor whose expertise matches the topic of your project, and they will hold meetings with you throughout the semester to guide you in the right direction regarding your research.

There can be many expectations when starting at a university, and some of you certainly have expectations that your time at university will involve a lot of great parties. It's best when your expectations are also fulfilled, and you are lucky that RUC primarily has a wide range of different party committees that host great parties throughout the semester, and in addition, at global humanities, you have two different party committees to choose from!

Your local party committee

THICC is the party committee for the international students at RUC. Although they are not as active anymore as they have been previously, they have delivered awesome parties across nationalities up until November last year, that you also could attend free of charge. They always ensured a good themed party, great atmosphere, and a space where students united no matter which institute they were from.

If you want to stay updated on the inevitable comeback of this party committee, make sure to follow them right away on Instagram and Facebook.

And you can always join and be the ones that bring this party committee back on the scene!

The HumCouncil

In addition to a lively party scene, there is also a fantastic social and academic environment at Humanities. The HumCouncil (Humrådet) is your local interest organization, and its purpose is to safeguard your social, academic, and political interests in your education. Each semester, they organize a wide range of cozy and exciting events that make your study time at RUC even better. For example, they hold:

  • Academic workshops on study planning, academic writing, exchange programs, and more during your first semester

  • Halloween get together

  • University election seminars

  • Informative coffee stands

  • Christmas crafts and group project writing days in December

The HumCouncil is an organization run by students, for students, and you all have the opportunity to participate in their activities in any way you choose. If you are interested in their work, you can join the HumCouncil board and try your hand at planning and organizing events, or simply participate in their events. Follow them on Instagram and Facebook to stay updated on future events.
